Rural Load Management System (RLMS) was introduced to reduce transformer load and improve tail-end voltage in rural areas by providing them power at different time slots. Implementation of RLMS concept requires staggering of power between different consumer groups by switching the transformers in a circuit on and off.

MESCOM has now increased the efficiency of RLMS further by automating the entire procedure through Central Control Software.

Through this software, about 6,500 transformers in Kadur in Chikmagalur district, and Sagar in Shimoga district, can be controlled from any place with the click of a button. Using this software, each transformer is given a specific number through a GSM connection (subject to connectivity).

The central control software dials the particular transformer to get details like energy and load parameters. In cases where the audit reveals high losses, reasons can be investigated into and the system would help check power thefts as well.

The central control software has been developed by SOAMatrix Software Private Ltd using its flagship SOALayersTM SOA platform. SOALayersTM is a comprehensive SOA platform from SOAMatrix comprising of all the layers of SOA stack including process, service and data integration, business rules, management and governance.

A trial run was undertaken from December to mid-January and the commissioning of feeders began in late January.

The cost of the entire project is Rs 42 crore, which includes a four-year maintenance contract.

Presently, four feeders have been connected to this software and under each feeder there are about 30 to 50 transformers. Commissioning of all feeders - 40 at Sagar, 57 at Kadur and 13 at Chikmagalur -is expected to be completed by June.
